SAN ANTONIO – Just days after two people were allegedly killed by a drunk driver, the relatives of one of the victims ask for precaution prior to the New Year celebrations.
David Alaquinez, 23, died at dawn on Christmas Eve when he was trapped under a trailer after trying to avoid a driver who was traveling in the opposite direction and supposedly intoxicated.
“We are devastated,” lamented Arturo Rodríguez, Alaquinez’s cousin. “I didn’t think so, you know? I’m still incredulous to this day. “
The accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of Loop 410 at the height of Roosevelt Avenue, shortly before 3 am on December 24.
Local and state authorities previously said they would increase patrols during the holidays to catch those who are driving under the influence of alcohol.
For Alaquinez’s family, the accident that caused his death was a preventable tragedy, so they now hope that other motorists will not make the same mistake.
“Don’t ruin her life,” warned Crystal Martínez, the victim’s cousin. “There are families who are on the roads and they are not to blame. It just isn’t fair. “
