Mann worked with forged certificates and diplomas for 18 years. Most recently, he was a major in the army and chief of staff of the Swedish auxiliary force in Mali.
One thinks of the Captain von Köpenick: with a fake diploma, a Swede sneaked into the army of his country and climbed to the highest post as an officer. The man was posted as a liaison officer in the highest NATO command for Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium, the Swedish army said on Wednesday. The wrong officer was also on international missions, including in Mali and Afghanistan.
According to media reports, the man forged a diploma from the Swedish Academy of Officers, and not only that: he also had a forged high school diploma, a forged certificate of political science studies, and a forged driver’s license.
He served in the military for 18 years and rose to the rank of major. As such, he was most recently Chief of Staff of the Swedish aid contingent in Mali. According to the Swedish army, the military alliance was informed of the case because of its deployment to NATO. Sweden is not a member of NATO, but has strengthened cooperation with it since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.
