Hundreds of posts and comments were collected by a picture whose publishers claimed that it was from a volleyball match between the Russian and Algerian women’s teams, in which the Russian team appears with the veil and the Algerian one without it.
The leaflets, consisting of two pictures, show two groups of women, the first wearing sports clothes with Algeria written on them, and the second of veiled girls wearing sports clothes with Russia written on them.
The accompanying caption read, “The Russia-Algeria women’s match.”
However, the claim is incorrect, as the first picture shows the Algerian national team during a volleyball match, while the second picture shows the Russian national team players wearing the hijab exceptionally during a futsal match in Iran, in compliance with the dress code there.
The publications garnered hundreds of posts and comments on social media from Facebook and the X platform (formerly Twitter).
A picture of the circulating posts
However, searches through search engines show that the two pictures do not belong to a match that brought together the Russian and Algerian volleyball teams on one stadium. Rather, they are from two different sporting events in two different times and places.
The picture of the Algerian women’s national team was published more than 6 years ago on local websites in 2017 as part of news about the women’s national volleyball team’s readiness to participate in an African championship.
The second photo, published in 2016 on Russian local websites and on the website of the Russian Futsal Federation, shows the Russian futsal team in a friendly match against the Iranian national team at home.
The Russian players wore the hijab exceptionally, in compliance with the dress code in Iran.
Russian coach Alexander Kochetkov explained at the time, “The Russian players travel regularly to Iran and when they play in the Islamic Republic they wear hijabs and pants, out of respect for religion and place.”
