Fall Fun: Apple Picking Locations in the Tri-State Area

NEW YORK — One of the most well-known fall activities of the season is apple picking. And if you live in the tri-state area you are lucky to be in the ideal region for this type of activity.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have many places to go and participate in the beloved fall tradition.

From apple picking to cider donuts to hayrides, we’re sharing these local spots for fall fun.

GRANJA FAMILIAR HARBES (LONG ISLAND)

Where: Harbes Orchard — 5698 Sound Ave., Riverhead, NY

Hours: Open Monday and Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; weekends and holidays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (Closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).

What is it: Apple picking is a main attraction at the 78-acre Harbes Orchard, part of Harbes Family Farm. The orchard has 27 different varieties of apples. However, Harbes Family Farm also features a number of other beloved fall activities, including pumpkin picking and cider donuts.

GRANJA DE LEWIN (LONG ISLAND)

Where: 812 Sound Ave., Calverton, NY

Hours: 9:00 am to 4:30 pm (except when otherwise noted due to limited quantities or weather conditions). Call 631-929-4327 to confirm daily hours.

What is it: The Lewin Farm is a family farm in its fourth generation. It is the first self-catering farm on Long Island. Apple picking extends into October and sometimes later depending on the season. Apple varieties include honeycrisp and macoun ready.

WILKENS FRUIT AND FIR FARM (WESTCHESTER COUNTY)

Where: 1335 White Hill Road, Yorktown Heights, NY

Hours: Pick yours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What is it: Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm, located in Yorktown Heights, New York, offers a wide variety of activities including apple picking, pumpkin picking, peach picking, a corn maze, and more.

STUART FRUIT FARM (WESTCHESTER COUNTY)

Where: 62 Granite Springs Road, Granite Springs, NY

Hours: Choose yours from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm daily.

What is it: This family farm has been in Westchester County since 1828 and features a number of activities, including apple picking that began on September 6 and runs daily through November. Macintosh, Gala, Red Delicious and Fujis are among the dozens of apple varieties on offer.

GRANJA DE ALSTEDE

Where: 84 Route 513, Chester, NJ

Hours: Pick-Your-Own is open daily through November.

What is it: Alstede Farm offers apple picking and other family-oriented fall activities, including pumpkin people and corn mazes. However, for health reasons, Alstede Farms currently requires that all tickets Pick-Your-Own are purchased on their website before your visit.

DEMAREST FARM

Where: 244 Wierimus Road, Hillsdale, NJ

Hours: Weekends in September and October from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

What is it: LDemarest Farms also offers pumpkin picking, movie nights and a Halloween light show, as well as other activities. All tickets must be purchased in advance.

GRANIJA PHILLIPS

Where: Milford, NJ

Hours: Open Saturdays and Sundays only from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (with last entry at 5:30 pm).

What is it: This family farm offers picking apples and peaches.

BLUE LEASE ORCHARDS

Where: 125 Plumtrees Road, Bethel, CT

Hours: Pick your own apples from 11:000 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What is it: There are over 20 varieties of apples to pick at Blue Jay Orchards. Additionally, there is a pumpkin patch, farmers market, and bakery.

GRANJA SILVERMAN

Where: 451 Sport Hill Road, Easton, CT

Hour: They are open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

What is it: In addition to apple picking, Silverman’s Farms offers scenic tractor rides, an animal farm, and a country market.

ROGERS ORCHARD

Where: Southington, CT

Hour: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

What is it: Apple picking season at Rogers Orchards, located in Southington, has begun and will continue through mid-October.
