Falcon’s Captain America and the Winter Soldier wanted Chris Evans’ place

Wyatt Russelll had previously auditioned to play Captain America before getting the role for the Disney + series Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The circle has come full circle for Wyatt Russell. Ten years after trying his luck for the title role in Captain America : First Avenger for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wyatt Russell finally has the option of wearing the famous blue tights. After all this time, he became the “new Captain America” for the Disney + series. Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

After playing America’s hero for nine films, Chris Evans returned his shield in Avengers : Endgame. Wyatt Russell was then cast to take up the torch (or almost) alongside Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie.

And it was a bit by chance that he finally took over the role. For the show Good Morning America (GMA), Wyatt Russell returned to his first casting a decade earlier to play Captain America but also the one for the Disney + series:

“I honestly think the first audition was more of a read, to see if I was a good actor. I don’t think I competed for the role, but it was crazy. This time, I had no idea what role I was auditioning for. I just got something like ‘Marvel wants you to read something’ and I knew what it was about after I got the part.

We all know Marvel’s efforts to keep their little affairs a secret, so this blind audition doesn’t sound terribly strange. Thus, Wyatt Russell plays John F. Walker aka the “New Captain America” for the showrunnée series by Malcolm Spellman. As for knowing more about the character, GMA asked the actor if his version 2.0 of the Captain will be a hero or an anti-hero.

“You will see” Russell replied before joking about Marvel’s silent practices, “There are two guys in black suits with laser sights aimed at my forehead”.

Indeed, Marvel is not a fan of spoilers. We know how Tom Holland, aka Spiderman, was “punished” for never holding his tongue in interviews. Regardless of his character’s arc, Wyatt Russell is going to have to complete Chris Evans’ costume and that might not be easy (for both him and his character) as the second episode proved.

It will then be necessary to wait for the continuation of Falcon and the Winter Soldier in order to see if this new Captain will be the great hero that was his predecessor or if he will mar the name of his bad deeds. In the meantime, you can find our opinion on the cliffhanger of the first episode of the Disney + series.
