Fake Cannabis Employment Scam Costs Colorado Woman $1,000 »Scam News

A Colorado woman has lost $1,000 after falling for a fake cannabis employment scam.

Job fraud is big business and can fall prey to unsuspecting and desperate job seekers. That Federal Trade Commission says in recent years says these fake job scams have cost Americans hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years.

Colorado woman scammed by fake cannabis job offer

Here is a recent example of how these scams work. A Colorado woman thought she was going to get a good, high-paying home office job in the cannabis industry — but not only did she end up without a job, she also lost $1,000.

According to a report by KDVR, Sonya Perez was promised a job for $30 an hour, including $17 an hour for training. But in doing so, she was asked to send them $1,000. The front company offered to back up the request by sending a check for $2,500 to the woman’s bank account. She sent them the $1,000, but the check for $2,500 never made it to the bank.

Fake employment scams are big business

According to the FTC, about one in three income scams involve bogus job listings with a fake check as part of the scheme. People will see the money in their account giving them a false sense of security. However, if the check bounces, the victim has to pay the bank back for the fraudulent funds.
