Statues are part of our history

“Slavery, colonization, and the slave trade are part of our history. But as we tell it, is it our story that we are telling or the story of the colonizer ?, wonders Professor Abdou Aziz Kébé.

The real story

”It is rather the history of the colonizer that we tell, it is rather the history of the colonizer that we celebrate with these statues. But our history is suffering, our history is injustice, our history is the negation of our human dignity. We cannot tell this story, which is ours in its dimensions which we feel and which are objective ”, answers the teacher at the university Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar on the Rfm.

Disagree

He did not entirely agree with the way the story was written and asked for its rectification. “It is not possible to tell our story and put Faidherbe, Golbert, among others, who bear the name of our schools, of our streets”.

Our own story

“I think it is time that we tell our own story, of our suffering, of the negation of our dignity by the colonizer; that doesn’t mean we’re going after Westerners. This story, those who did it are no longer alive but the heritage remains for us. It’s not a question of unbolting but we have to decolonize how we tell the story ”, reframes Abdou Aziz Kébé
