British scientists have identified a dozen and a half factors that may influence the early development of dementia. The results of their study, conducted from 2006 to 2010 using UK Biobank data, were published in JAMA Neurology.

This study involved more than 356 thousand people under the age of 65, which is recognized as the threshold for dementia as premature. Despite widespread opinions about bad habits and genetic predisposition, low level of education came first among the 15 identified factors. This is followed by low socioeconomic status and genetic predisposition.

The top 5 also included opposite factors: complete abstinence from alcohol, as well as abuse and alcoholism. Social isolation, vitamin D deficiency, high levels of C-reactive protein, decreased hand grip strength, hearing loss and deafness were also included in the list of factors.

The top five is rounded out by hypotension, stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression. Scientists believe that their research opens up opportunities for the prevention of a severe neurodegenerative disease, which still has no effective therapy.
