Facebook’s boycott will also head to Europe

A few weeks ago, American groups defending human rights, which together support the Stop Hate for Profit initiative, ie the Stop Hate for Profit campaign, called for an boycott of advertising. She protests against the lax approach to hate speech, harassment and misinformation. Facebook should be the breeding ground for all these problems.

The initiative is backed by Common Sense Media and Free Press, as well as the civil rights groups Color of Change and the Anti-Defamation League. It is the last mentioned group acting under the acronym ADL that leads the whole processes.

The next logical step is global pressure.

Jim Steyer, Common Sense Media

Jim Steyer of Common Sense Media said the boycott in the United States was just the tip of the iceberg. “The next logical step is global pressure,” Steyer told Reuters, adding that leading European companies will now be addressed as part of the Stop Hate for Profit campaign.

The initiative will try to persuade them to also download their advertising from Facebook. If this happens, it can have devastating consequences for Facebook. Advertising is the main source of income for the world’s largest social network.

According to the Bloomberg agency, the current boycott in the USA has already cost Facebook $ 7.2 billion, or CZK 167 billion.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg responded promptly. He announced at the end of last week that the largest social network in the world will more strictly moderate the content of published posts. Hateful content in ads will be completely blocked and Facebook will alert users to problematic posts.

The boycott was started by Trump’s contributions

The deletion of Facebook posts began to be closely watched a few weeks ago, when the management of this social network became the target of criticism for failing to mark and remove some controversial statements of US President Donald Trump.

One of them concerned, for example, the situation after the death of the black man George Floyd in Minneapolis, specifically police interventions. “When the looting starts, he will shoot,” Trump first wrote on Twitter, but then his post also appeared on Facebook.
