Facebook presents a lightweight prototype of virtual reality sunglasses – ICT news

The Facebook research department presented a prototype of a sunglasses-like gadget with which to view virtual reality images. The glasses should be much lighter and more comfortable than existing RV glasses.

According to Facebook, current virtual reality glasses are heavy, because there must be a distance between the light source and the lens. Thanks to the use of “holographic” lenses, this would not be necessary with the new sunglasses.

Key work

The prototype can no longer display only images in green tones and the rendering of the depth has yet to be refined, reports Facebook on its research web page. Ultimately, the company wants to integrate full color screens into the gadget. If Facebook gets there, the glasses should offer new virtual reality apps, due to greater wearing comfort.

Note that Facebook owns Oculus, which manufactures virtual reality headsets.
