F1 to return to Africa

Formula 1 must return to Africa as part of its change to become a more socially responsible sport, said six-time champion Lewis Hamilton.

Asked by a fan of questions and answers on the YouTube channel of the sponsor of Mercedes Petronas where he would like to go for a new F1 race, Hamilton did not hesitate with his answer.

“Easy, Africa. This is such an important place to go back to, ”he said, referring to the continent that hosted a race with the 1993 South African Grand Prix in Kyalami.

“For the moment, Formula 1 is going to the countries and does not really leave much, if anything.

“Formula 1 has to become a sport that goes to certain places and leaves something that can really help communities.

“I think that to first draw attention to Africa and highlight the beautiful place it is, I think it is the most important place we have to go to.”

And while Africa is considered the poorest continent in terms of GDP, Hamilton insists that every race doesn’t have to guarantee profits for F1 stakeholders.

“It has to happen where it is not just about money, but about people,” he said. “In the business world, that is not always the case, so it is something that I really insist on. “
