14.15 – The trophy, did you know that …

The British GP winner’s cup was created in 1871 and is called the Royal Automobile Club Trophy: it weighs almost 3 kilos and is 64 centimeters high. The original is gold and was made in Covent Garden by one of the most important goldsmiths of Queen Victoria’s reign. The names of the winners are engraved on the lower belt. It begins in 1948, when Formula 1 did not yet exist and Luigi Villoresi was the winner on Maserati. The pilots are entitled to a replica of the cup. However, the original is used for the podium ceremony.

Silverstone is one of the most physically demanding tracks for drivers. The current Formula 1 achieve lateral acceleration close to 5g both at the Copse, which is run almost in full, and in the sequence of Maggots and Becketts, where the very fast changes of direction put the set up to the whip. The balance is fundamental to be able to face the next straight, the Hangar Straight.
