As a result of the eyewitness’s prompt action, a potentially drunk driver of a Volkswagen Passat was arrested by calling the police, which could have caused a major accident.
On October 12, while driving in the direction of Riga, a driver noticed a Volkswagen Passat, which was unable to stay in its lane, crossing the center line from time to time and threatening to cause a collision with oncoming traffic. An eyewitness followed the car from a safe distance and called the police, who forced two Volkswagen vehicles to stop the Volkswagen driver.
The driver was tested for exhaled alcohol, but no exhaled alcohol was detected.
The editorial board of the portal iAuto (15.10.2020) received the following answer about the visible situation from Līne Kaļķe, Senior Specialist of the Public Relations Division of the State Police: “On October 12, at around 16.00, information was received from a resident that a VW Passat driver was driving inadequately from Līgatne to Sigulda, endangering other drivers and possibly under the influence of alcohol.
The driver of the reported vehicle was stopped shortly afterwards in cooperation with the local municipal police. The driver was tested for exhaled alcohol, but no exhaled alcohol was detected.
Three administrative proceedings have been initiated regarding the incident – on the use of a telephone or smart device when the vehicle is in motion; for crossing the road sign “Continuous line” and for unreasonable entry into the opposite direction lane or unreasonable departure from the carriageway, thus endangering traffic safety.
The State Police expresses its gratitude to the resident, who did not remain indifferent and reported a driver who endangered other road users with his actions.
If the driver suspects that any of the surrounding drivers are under the influence of alcohol or other substances, please inform the police immediately by calling 110. The caller should inform the police about the approximate section of the road where the suspicious driver was traveling, and it would be desirable that its vehicle make and national registration plate are indicated.
In the specific example, the driver acted according to the situation and informed the police about what had happened.”
