Extreme drought ravages the Netherlands, Forester Tim is very concerned

This morning forester Tim posted the picture below. The map shows that especially the area where he works is plagued by drought.

Tim, who calls himself ‘forest ranger of the Rijk van Nijmegen’ on Twitter, sees the drought as ‘damage of the past two years’. “You are still reaping the ‘benefits’ of that,” he says ironically.

Worrying situation

The forest ranger is therefore concerned about the consequences of the extreme drought. “A very dry soil is not good for the trees and plants and animals can no longer have access to drinking water.”

The fact that the Netherlands was allowed to enjoy some cooling in the form of rain in recent days has little impact.

“You won’t get anywhere with those few showers. You need drizzle for six months,” he says. “You also have to catch up on the past years.”

Rigorous measures

For ranger Tim, taking measures are very important. “I especially hope that as a result of this summer we will take rigorous measures from the government.”

He emphasizes that he is not a scientist himself, but he thinks it would be a good idea to take measures to reduce flies or eat less meat. “Or more on the bike,” he says.

When asked if there is anything good about the drought, the forester replies: “No, nothing at all.”

Rainfall deficit in the Netherlands

The precipitation deficit in the Netherlands in 2020 is 251 millimeters. This makes 2020 one of the driest years ever. The precipitation deficit is higher than 5 percent in the driest years since the start of the measurements.

In 1976, the Netherlands experienced its driest year with a precipitation deficit of 361 millimeters.
