Extraordinary Romanian chemists. Prof. Constantinescu: No one from Romania has heard! There are two different worlds

Prof. Dr. Ștefan Constantinescu spoke about Romanian researchers who are not known in the country, but are highly appreciated by foreign experts, in an exclusive interview with DCNews and DCMedical.

“When you talk abroad with experts from other Romanian countries about Romania, they know some very good people in Romania who are not the famous ones here. There are two different worlds. I had the pleasure to talk to the Nobel Prize winner, Prof. Jean Marie-Lehn, who gave me four examples of extraordinary Romanian chemists who did amazing things that no one in Romania had heard of “, said Prof. Dr. Constantinescu, at the Academy of Health.

The best solution would be for Romanian projects to be evaluated in Brussels

“So there is a fundamental problem: the evaluation in the country of the value of our researchers. Therefore, I believe that the best solution would be for all projects to be evaluated by European panels in Brussels. Let there be no more jury in the country.

The best Romanian researchers will be in these juries and will analyze proposals not only from Romania. We need to create a real European research system. The research is one, scientific research, not Romanian, not Polish “, he added.

It is not about the lack of money, but about distributing it to those who deserve it

“I think that if, with the same money as today, the evaluation of the projects would be done in Brussels, in panels, we would probably better select those who will obtain the funding. The problem is that there is not enough money. It is an obvious problem, that not enough funding is given to research where it is worthwhile. In vain we make new buildings through pharaonic projects – those buildings will remain useless, even if they are written on the institute or center. It is not the construction of a building that will lead us to the development of research, but the investment in people, in young people “, added Prof. Dr. Ștefan Constantinescu.

“In order to increase investment in research, there will have to be a final renegotiation of the treaty between the countries of the European Union to reverse some things that were obviously wrong, such as that healthcare is a national competence, not a European one. Here, the consequence was that when the pandemic came, Europe did not have the necessary mechanisms to limit the spread of the infection and responded heterogeneously and hard. These things need to be fixed, “he said.
