External elevator malfunction causes shaking at One Vanderbilt skyscraper in New York.

NEW YORK — There was some nervousness at New York City’s second-tallest office building after an elevator malfunction caused floors to shake inside, according to building officials.

People inside One Vanderbilt, the 93-story building next to Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan that opened in 2020, said they could feel the skyscraper shaking on Monday afternoon.

The New York City Department of Buildings told our sister network NBC New York that an exterior elevator malfunction caused a shaking sensation inside. The department said crews were working on an open-air elevator at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, the tourist attraction and partially open-air terrace area at the top of the building with sweeping views of the city, when a mechanical problem caused shake several floors.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt was closed to the public at the time, authorities said. No injuries were reported, and there was no danger to the building or the occupants.

The elevator, which was undergoing maintenance, will need to be repaired, but a construction official said there were no major issues.
