Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency: “Tonight we are witnessing a historic weather event with record rains across the city, brutal floods and dangerous conditions on our streets,” he wrote on Twitter. People should seek shelter in houses and not go out on the streets to enable rescue workers to do their job. “Stay away from the metro. Stay away from the streets. Do not drive into this severe flood,” continued de Blasio. Around 5300 households are without electricity.

State of emergency also in the state of New York

Shortly thereafter, New York State followed suit: “I’m calling a state of emergency to help New Yorkers hit by the storm tonight,” wrote Governor Kathy Hochul on Twitter. “Please stay away from the streets and avoid all unnecessary journeys.”

The city of New York also imposed a travel ban until five a.m. on Thursday morning (local time). “All non-emergency vehicles must be off the streets and highways of NYC,” said the city on Twitter.

Heavy rain since records began

It was the heaviest rain since records began in New York City: Within just an hour, around 80 millimeters of rain fell in Central Park in Manhattan, according to the National Weather Service. These values are well above the previous record of 49 millimeters in 60 minutes, which – set up in the course of the tropical storm “Henri” – was only around a week old. So far, summer 2021 is the rainiest in New York history.

A video by Unicef spokesman Joe English showed Queens Boulevard in the district of the same name, which was so flooded that passengers on a public bus had to get on the seats. Even in a subway station, water penetrated with the force of a spring tide, as pictures showed.

According to Mayor Hector Lora, a man was killed in Passaic, a town in the neighboring state of New Jersey. The victim’s car was full of water, Lora told CNN. Firefighters were able to save two more people from the vehicle.

US Open interrupted

The extreme weather also hit the US Open, which is currently taking place, and the German tennis player Angelique Kerber, whose game has been postponed. In the Louis Armstrong Stadium, in which Kerber was to play her second round match against Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine on Wednesday evening, it rained so heavily from the side, despite the roof, that the game had to be suspended indefinitely. The area in Flushing Meadows was also partially flooded, so that thousands of visitors either had to seek shelter or wade through the water.

A few hours before the heavy rain, the authorities in New York and the surrounding area had warned of severe storms, life-threatening floods and even tornadoes.

09:34 from initiative

09:34 from Initiative Neue … If I remember correctly, Ms. Merkel flew to the USA BEFORE the heavy rain, Ms. Merkel also doesn’t have a glass ball or clairvoyant powers. So what’s the point of this bashing again?
