Explosions are heard in the vicinity of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

“Eight loud detonations were heard yesterday (Wednesday) around 10:00 local time (9:00 CET) that shook the window panes of the facility and more were heard today (Thursday),” the statement said.

IAEA observers, who have been at the power plant since September last year, have been reporting similar incidents to the Vienna headquarters almost daily in recent days and weeks. While some shots sound quite far from the device, others seem to be in its immediate vicinity.

Staff under enormous pressure

Russian invasion troops seized the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine last March in the first days of the invasion of Ukraine. However, Ukrainian personnel are still working at the power plant, who, according to earlier statements by the Ukrainian side, are working under enormous pressure. The facility has repeatedly been the target of shelling, for which the Russian and Ukrainian armies have blamed each other.

The plant is disconnected from Ukraine’s power system due to safety concerns, and all six reactors are shut down. But two of them operate in limited operation and provide electricity for the power plant itself and the adjacent town of Enerhodar, writes the Russian-language BBC server.
