Explosion in St. Petersburg Industrial Site Due to Drone Attack: No Injuries Reported

In the “fuel oil drain area” at an industrial site in St. Petersburg, “an incident occurred that required the attention of law enforcement agencies,” the governor’s office reported to RBC and TASS following reports of an explosion in the city.

Judging by messages and videos posted on social networks, the explosion was heard in different areas of St. Petersburg. Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg has introduced temporary flight restrictions, the BBC reports.

“Fontanka” writes that the city was attacked by a drone, which was shot down by an air defense system. According to the publication the drone was hit by the S-400 “Triumph” anti-aircraft missile system around 04:20 ambut fell just half an hour later on the territory of the “Nevsky Mazut” enterprise.

Several tanks and parked cars were damaged by drone debris, the media write. The St. Petersburg Governor’s Office told reporters that there were no injuries and no property damage as a result of the “incident.”

An investigation is underway in St. Petersburg after the overnight “incident” in the Nevsky district of the city, Governor Alexander Beglov said.

“At night, residents of neighborhoods near the Gluhoozersko highway heard a loud explosion. An incident occurred at an industrial site in the Nevsky district, which requires the attention of law enforcement authorities,” said Beglov.

Beglov clarified that as a result of the incident, there were no injuries or damage.

“There is no significant material damage. Inspections are currently being conducted. The city administration is working in cooperation with the law enforcement agencies,” the governor said.

Until now, drones have rarely reached this far north. On Wednesday evening, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on drone attack on another region in northwestern Russia – Pskov. Two weeks ago, Russian authorities first reported a drone attack in the Leningrad region.
