Exploring the Mini-Neptune Exoplanet Gliese 1214b with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)

VIVA West Java – Mini Neptune is widespread throughout the Milky Way and according to the Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), is the most common type of exoplanet. GJ 1214b or Gliese 1214b is one of them.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is known to be making progress, including with the TRAPPIST-1 system which houses seven Earth-sized or Super-Earth worlds.

We still have many questions about how planets formed, how their atmospheres evolved, and why some types are so common but not present in our Solar System.

But with so many exoplanets to study, astronomers using JWST must choose their targets wisely. That thoughtful process led to a team of astronomers finding Gliese 1214b.

They observed mini-Neptune with the MIRI JWST and Low Resolution Spectrometer, publishing their results in a paper in Nature entitled A reflective, metal-rich atmosphere for GJ 1214b from its JWST phase curve.

The lead author is Eliza Kempton, a researcher at the University of Maryland, USA. Gliese 1214 is a red dwarf star about 40 light years away in the constellation Ophiuchus.
