Telework was a very distant concept, even unknown in 2019, the year of inauguration of the S-Hub. This coworking space, located on the Zac Meilbourg in Yutz, along the A31, was then a pioneer in this field. Like any innovative project, a certain skepticism has accompanied its implementation.

Pierre Cuny, president of the Portes de France agglomeration and mayor of Thionville, has however never deviated from his position: in his eyes, teleworking would constitute, in the future, a strong response to the congestion of border traffic.

A premium concierge

The facts corroborated this prophecy which made its detractors smile at the time. But the mechanics kicked in too quickly: “In itself, the news proved us right, but not on this type of teleworking”, notes Claire Talbot. The project director at Sodevam, in charge of the development of the Zac Meilbourg on behalf of the agglomeration, had dreamed big for this Next generation S-Hub.

Duplicated on the model of the coworking spaces in vogue in large Luxembourg trusts, “like at PWC”, the Thionvillois site included 80 telework stations scattered over an open space, a meeting room and a premium concierge service. The latter could take care of the delivery of meals, sending letters, even making appointments to pass the technical control… Unfortunately, the health crisis has reduced this offer.

12 € per day

“The successive confinements and the Franco-Luxembourgish agreements relating to the extension of the days of teleworking between the two countries have stopped our rise in power”, regrets Claire Talbot. Which still keeps hope for the future. One only has to take a look beyond the bay window of the S-Hub to measure the worsening of the chronic disease affecting the A31.

In the morning and in the evening, this corridor exudes the frustration of stationary cross-border commuters: “Making a detour via the S-Hub at rush hour is a good alternative. You can also reach the space on foot by leaving Thionville station. In short, this time saving, also ecological, could revitalize the place. “Refitting a meeting room is also under consideration.

For the time being, around fifteen boxes, rented for €12 a day, are sparingly occupied by a handful of cross-border teleworkers. For them, the shift from their workplace to their home may have proved too abrupt. The S-Hub is like their home on weekdays.
