Experts’ Opinion: Is it Necessary to Urinate Before Sexual Intercourse?

There is no doubt that you always have to pee after sex. But what about urinating before sex? Is that just as important?

Having sex with a full bladder is no fun. But because it’s so important to urinate after sex to reduce the risk of a bladder infection, many women hold back their urine. A gynaecologist, urologist and pelvic floor physiotherapist are present HLN out or urinate before sex is necessary.

For women who suffer from a prolapsed bladder, it can be quite annoying not to go to the toilet beforehand. “Bladder prolapse occurs in some women after birth or due to old age. In such people, some residual urine always remains after urinating. When they then have sex, that residual urine ends up in the bladder again. That can also give such an uncomfortable feeling. If you urinate beforehand, the chance of this is smaller,” explains gynecologist Wilfried Gyselaers.

Pee before sex

Peeing after sex is therefore important to prevent a bladder infection, but does peeing before sex also help against this? According to urologist François Hervé, women’s urethra is only a few centimeters long. Much shorter than in men. This makes it easier for bacteria released during sex to enter the bladder, causing a bladder infection. Because the bladder is wet and warm, it is the ideal place for bacteria. “But when you go to the toilet just before sex, your bladder is empty. This gives the bacteria less chance to ‘cling’, which reduces the risk of a bladder infection.”

Not being able to urinate after sex

According to the experts, it is less necessary to urinate before sex. But what should you do if you urinated before having sex and are therefore unable to urinate after sex? According to pelvic floor physiotherapist Claes, most people can go to the toilet because sex automatically releases juices. But is it really not working? Then she recommends drinking a glass of water before sex.
