Why intervene when so few people are in the hospital?
288 corona patients are now in hospital, 58 of them in intensive care. At the height of the crisis, in early April, more than 4,000 corona patients were in the hospital. In that respect, there is not much going on yet. Why would you intervene now?
According to the cabinet, this has to do with the speed at which the virus is currently spreading. The number of new infections doubled in a week. The number of hospital admissions is expected to rise at this rate in a few weeks’ time. “It always takes a while before you also see the effect in hospital admissions”, argues epidemiologist Patrica Bruijning of the UMC. “You also saw that in the spring. People who are ill do not end up in hospital immediately.”
