Experiencing Two Flu Symptoms? Prof Spector: Think of it as Covid-19

In the UK, the ratio of Covid-19 cases is now much higher than that of the common cold.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — In the UK, Covid-19 cases had increased with the same symptoms, but this time many had sore throats. One of the professors appealed to people who feel symptoms like flu You should think of Covid-19 as a precautionary measure to prevent transmission.

The founder of the symptom-tracking app ZOE Covid Study, Professor Tim Spector, warned anyone experiencing these two symptoms should conclude they have SARS-CoV-2. The two symptoms in question are feeling tired and sore throat.

“The symptoms (for Covid-19 and the common cold) are almost the same, except for Covid-19 which generally makes the body feel more tired and there is a sore throat. So (if the flu) you should consider it Covid-19,” he said.

Prof Spector said, currently there are twice as many cases of Covid-19 as the common cold. The ratio has never been this high. “Hopefully this wave will end soon,” he said.

Experts at the ZOE app also revealed that 58 percent of people with the coronavirus had a sore throat, while 47 percent had a headache. The latest data shows that about 43 percent of people with the corona virus have a cough, 41 percent have a stuffy nose, and 39 percent have a cold.

An estimated 3.2 million people were exposed to the virus in the week leading up to July 20, compared to 3.8 million people in the previous week. However, medics warned that there were still many infected in the vicinity.

On the other hand, Deputy Director of the Public Health Program at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, said there had been a decline in the number of cases and hospitalizations. “While this is encouraging, Covid-19 has not gone away and we would really like to see further declines in the coming weeks and months.”

People aged 75 years and over remain at risk of developing severe symptoms if they do not get the Covid-19 vaccine. Dr Amirthalingam urges everyone to be vaccinated immediately to provide the best protection for themselves.
