Exhibitions – Halberstadt – Gleimhaus dedicates an exhibition to lying baron Münchhausen – Culture

Halberstadt (dpa / sa) – The Gleimhaus Halberstadt takes the 300th birthday of the storyteller Hieronymus Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen, who became famous as a baron of lies, as an occasion for an exhibition. “Wonderful stories of the Baron von Münchhausen. Text – Image – Curiosities” will be opened on Tuesday via video on the Gleimhaus homepage and YouTube channel. A short tour of the exhibition is planned. The origins of the Münchhausen stories and their meaning are explained.

Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803), among others, ensured that the Münchhausen stories became very popular. According to the Gleimhaus, Münchhausen (1720-1797) was known as a good storyteller even beyond the country’s borders, permanent fame followed with the literary figure Münchhausen. Stories by various authors appeared in quick succession. The ride on the cannonball is particularly well known, but so is self-rescue from the swamp and the halved horse.

Gleimhaus developed the special exhibition in cooperation with the Münchhausen Library in Zurich. Almost all the objects shown came from this collection.
