Excessive Consumption of Instant Drinks Can Double the Risk of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is often considered the second biggest killer cancer.

JAKARTA — Colon cancer is often considered as a cancer second biggest killer. Colon cancer is caused by cells that change and grow in the large intestine, which consists of the large intestine and rectum.

Cancer cells divide and multiply in the body so rapidly that the disease can be very difficult to detect and often lowers survival rates. By paying attention to a healthy lifestyle, you can make a difference. Certain foods and drinks can affect the risk of developing cancer in the first place.

Recent research published in the journal Gut reveals a link between sweet drink instant and the risk of colon cancer. Consuming instant sugary drinks every day can double the risk of colon cancer. Even this risk can be exposed before you turn 50 years old, especially for women. It was also found that 12 percent of the population of the United States (US) who drank more than three servings of this type of drink every day. The Gut study monitored 95,464 participants over 24 years taking into account what they ate and drank, as well as family history of diabetes bowel cancer and their lifestyle.

Over the years it was found that 109 women had bowel cancer before the age of 50. A higher intake of sugary drinks in adulthood was associated with a higher risk.

Those who drank two or more servings of this type of beverage each day were thought to be twice as likely to develop colon cancer, compared with women who drank less than one serving a week. Each daily serving of a drink was associated with a 16 percent higher risk, which rose to 32 percent per daily serving during adolescence.

If these drinks are replaced with drinks with artificial sweeteners, coffee, semi-skimmed milk, or whole milk, the risk of colon cancer is 36 percent lower. Although this is an observational study that cannot determine the cause, it is concluded that consumption of sugary drinks may contribute to the onset of early bowel cancer.

“Reducing intake and/or (replacing) with healthy drink in adolescents and young adults, may serve as an actionable strategy to reduce the burden of bowel cancer that develops before age 50,” the study further wrote.

Colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK. According to the NHS website, more than 90 percent of people with bowel cancer have one or a combination of the following symptoms:

1. Changes in bowel habits that are persistent (more frequent bowel movements, with looser bowel movements, and sometimes abdominal pain).

2. Blood in the stool without other symptoms of hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids). This makes it less likely that the cause is hemorrhoids.

3. Stomach pain, discomfort, or bloating, always caused by eating. This can result in a reduction in the amount of food eaten and weight loss.
