“Ex-President Donald Trump Guilty of Sexual Assault in Lawsuit Verdict”

The jury in the assault lawsuit and the libel case against ex-president Donald Trump in the United States has reached a verdict.

They find him guilty of sexually assaulting E. Jean Carroll, but acquit him of the charge that he raped her. Reuters reports.

Carroll is awarded two million dollars in compensation for assault and 2.7 million in compensation for the libel – so a total of almost five million dollars, equivalent to around NOK 50 million.

Carroll, who is now 79 years old, sued former US President Donald Trump last year, alleging that he raped her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s.

She has argued that Trump’s behavior amounts to a sexual crime because it was rape, sexual assault or forced touching, writes CNN.

The jury of nine people, six men and three women, had to unanimously agree on the various questions of guilt, and although they believed that Carroll could not prove that Trump raped her, they found him guilty of sexually abusing her.

Carroll also sued Trump for defamation because he accused her of lying when she first came forward with the allegations in 2019.

The case against Trump is a civil suit, and he has not been criminally prosecuted for the alleged rape or defamation.

Trump has not pleaded guilty during the two-week trial, where the court and jury have heard from Carroll and two other women who also claim Trump sexually assaulted them decades ago. But he gave an explanation this autumn.

Trump denies the incident and calls them fabrications. After the jury’s verdict, Trump rages and calls it “a disgrace”. The Trump campaign also says he will appeal the ruling, Reuters reports. (TV 2/NTB)
