Everything is Normal: A Belarusian Contemporary Drama Reflecting Traumas and Hopes

A play by the Belarusian author Vlada Khmeļ, a feminist activist and oppositionist of the Lukashenko regime Everything is normal (2019) was the Belarusian contemporary drama festival Wrie Box (Minsk) and the festival of new dramaturgy Ļubimovka (Moscow) in the list of nominees. The play was translated into Latvian by Arvis Vigulis in 2021 KatlZ Riga and the Lipke memorial organized readings of modern Belarusian drama, but the idea for a stage version of the play came to Yevgenia Shermeneva, wanting to create a play with actresses Marija Daniliukas and Daci Vitola.

“For me, this show is a story about how the system destroys women, how the fates of our parents were mutilated in the strict Soviet system. Perhaps many people don’t know that in the late 40s and early 50s, during Stalin’s time, there were separate schools for boys and girls in the education system. Later there was an absolute lack of freedom in human relationships, homosexuality was banned and prosecuted, it was impossible to live in an informal relationship without a “stamp” in the passport, single mothers were condemned… All this inevitably led to traumas that we still feel today through generations. But when we talked about it , we give ourselves the opportunity to part with pain and resentment, to forgive those who have wronged us because of our fears and insecurities. We hope that this show will tell the audience about love, which is often different, and the freedom that must be given,” Yevgenia Shermeneva.

At work Everything is normal traumas and hopes, the feeling of freedom and the shackles of tradition, the legacy of mutual relations of the USSR system and the role of women in society are reflected. The play is a reminder of the people in Belarus who tried to resist the regime but lost. Many have had to leave Belarus – the playwright Vlada Hmeļ has also been living in Poland since 2022, while the well-known Belarusian association Sveta Ben and Galya Chikiss, whose music plays in the show, moved to Berlin. The author of the play, Vlada Hmeļ, will also visit Riga for the premiere.

The show is bilingual and is performed in Latvian and Russian.
