Everything, everywhere, all at once on the starting line of the Oscars

The feature film is followed by the dramatic comedy The Banshees of Inisherin and the war movie In the west, nothing is new (9 nominations each), as well as biographical dramas Elvis (8 nominations) and The Fablemans (7 nominations).

The organization of the gala, which for ten years has had to deal with rollercoaster ratings, hopes to rally the general public this year with the presence of megaproductions such as Top Gun : Maverick, Black Panther : Long Live Wakanda, Avatar : The way of the water et The Batman.

These four titles, which have combined revenues of C$7.3 billion, garnered a total of 18 nominations.

Interest in the Oscars has waned considerably since the heyday of the 1990s. Titanicrewarded with 11 statuettes.

Contagious enthusiasm?

According to many analysts, Everything, everywhere, all at oncein which an overworked dry-cleaning business owner finds herself immersed in a multitude of parallel universes, is the strong favorite to reap top honors.

This rather crazy independent film was a great success in theaters, with 138 million Canadian dollars in revenue. Behind the film, there is a group of very endearing people, for whom it is impossible not to feel sympathyexplains Scott Feinberg, specialist columnist for the Hollywood Reporter.

The announced triumph could however come up against the voting system for the Oscar for best film, which tends to penalize polarizing works, he recalls. However, many members of the Academy just don’t understand the enthusiasm around this comedy produced by a duo of wacky thirtysomethings.

Clayton Davis, who covers ceremonies for the magazine Varietyalso believes that Everything, everywhere, all at once is one step ahead of its competitors. No film has lost the Best Picture award after winning all four major Guild Awardshe said Tuesday in an interview with Radio-Canada.

A first Oscar-winning Asian actress?

The competition in the four performance categories is, however, much tighter. I don’t remember a year […] where three of the four categories of actors and actresses were really quits or doublesobserve le critique Scott Feinberg.

The Oscar for best actress would be played between Cate Blanchett, ruthless conductor in Warehouseand Michelle Yeoh, the heroine of Everything, everywhere, all at oncewho could become the first winner of Asian origin to win this prize.

For Best Actor, Austin Butler (Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The whale) et Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) are neck and neck.

Just like Angela Bassett (Black Panther : Longue vie au Wakanda), Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything, everywhere, all at once) et Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) for the statuette of the best female supporting role.

Only Ke Huy Quan, former child star ofIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom forgotten by Hollywood for more than 20 years, seems almost certain to win an Oscar, by dint of accumulating the rewards for his supporting role as endearing husband in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Good visibility for Canada

A dozen Canadian filmmakers and artists are also in the running this year. In the ultimate category, we find the natives of Ontario James Cameron (Avatar : The way of the water) et Sarah Polley (what they say).

Montrealer Adrien Morot was cited in the category of best makeup and hairstyles, for his work in the drama The whale. He designed a set of prostheses weighing over 200 pounds, which was worn by fellow Canadian Brendan Fraser.

The film Navalnyby Torontonian Daniel Roher, which focuses on the poisoning in 2020 of the main opponent of the Kremlin, Alexeï Navalny, is in the running for the Oscar for best documentary feature.

In the category of best animated feature film, two representatives from Ontario are competing: Chris Williams, director of the Netflix production The sea monsterand Domee Shi, director of the Pixar film Red alert.

Finally, the short film The flying sailorco-directed by Calgarians Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, could earn the National Film Board its 13e golden statuette, out of an impressive total of 77 nominations in its history.
