Anyone who wants to unlock their iPhone or Android phone with facial recognition despite a mask or face mask is facing a huge problem. After all, Face ID and Co. require a “clear view” of the user’s face. But there is a trick – GIGA reveals it to you.

Update from April 27, 2020: As of today, a “mask requirement” applies in almost all federal states – in Schleswig-Holstein the regulation also applies from Wednesday. In almost all countries, mouth and nose protection must be worn, both in local public transport and in shops. If you want to unlock your iPhone or Android phone with a face mask like this, you should know this trick today.

They already exist in Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt: The mask requirement in the sign of Corona pandemic. Now the rest of the federal states follow and write the Mouthguard in parts of the public. As useful as this may be, using it is difficult iPhones and AndroidCell phones. These days they are mostly unlocked by facial recognition, but they fail with the mask on and the annoying entry of the pin must be done.

Unlock iPhone with Face ID defying mask: works with this trick

A Trick from china now lets us unlock the iPhone with the mouthguard on and there is also a remedy for Android phones. Let’s first look at the iPhone and Face ID. Apple Face detection is considered to be particularly safe and therefore needs to be tricked. Here’s how we do it:

• We open the settings and go to “Face ID & Code”.
• Now we choose “Configure alternative appearance”.
• Now the actual trick follows: We fold the mask in the middle and only cover about half the face with it. When the Face ID Assistant “twitches”, you have to pull the face mask slightly to the side until you are asked to turn your head.

• After successfully configuring the alternative appearance, the iPhone should also be unlocked with the mask on.

Good to know: Any recognition errors are possible initially. In this case, as usual, first unlock with a pin, over time the iPhone learns that the face you just rejected is authorized to access it, and face recognition improves.

Android phone and mask: This is how it works with unlocking

At Android phones the process is often easier because the Face recognition is usually less complex and you can simply save an alternative look with a mask. Below is a brief guide – the description of the menu items may vary slightly depending on the device, but should be similar. Let’s start:

• We open the settings and navigate to “Biometry & Password” or “Biometric data and security”.
• Now we tap on “Face Scan”, alternatively on “Face Detection”.
• The last step is the point “Register an alternative look” or “New alternative look”. Now we put on the mask and just follow the instructions on the phone – done.

From now on, the Android phone should now recognize us with the mouthguard on. Armed in this way, we do not have to constantly enter the pin or remove the mask for detection.
