2021 – Briton Richard Branson embarks on a tourist flight to the edge of space in the billionaire high-flying competition. US billionaire Jeff Bezos will follow suit on July 20. Their spaceships reach altitudes of 86 and 100 kilometers.

2020 – Weeks of mass protests against the arrest of governor Sergei Furgal begin in eastern Russia’s Khabarovsk region. He is accused of involvement in murders around 16 years ago. Furgal defeated the Kremlin Party candidate in his 2018 election.
2012 – More than eight years after the beginning of the mission in Kunduz at the end of 2003, the Bundeswehr hands over responsibility for security in the troubled region to the Afghans. By the end of 2014, they are to take over responsibility from the international troops throughout the country.
2007 – The European Parliament votes with a large majority for the final abolition of the letter monopoly. From 2011 onwards, private postal services in the EU will also be able to deliver letters weighing less than 50 grams. In Germany, the letter monopoly is to fall in 2008.
1997 – A fire at a luxury Thai hotel in Pattaya kills 91 people. The emergency exits were blocked to prevent drunkards from leaving.
1987 – Yugoslav baby Matej Gaspar becomes the five billionth person on earth. With this symbolic number, UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar honors the boy who was born in a Zagreb women’s clinic.

1982 – In the final of the 12th World Cup in Madrid, the Italian national team defeated the Federal Republic of Germany 3-1.
1947 – The refugee ship “Exodus” with 4,500 Jewish refugees on board sets sail from southern France bound for Palestine. British naval units boarded the ship on July 18 and later interned the Holocaust survivors in Schleswig-Holstein.
1897 – The first North Pole flight with a free balloon takes off. The Swedish engineer and polar explorer Salomon A. Andrée and two companions have to make an emergency landing on July 14 and die presumably in October.
