After years of fighting with opponents, Ineos has obtained its permit for Project One, the 3 billion euro ethane cracker that the British chemical group wants to build in the port of Antwerp. But is that installation as taxing as environmental associations claim or is it just as green as Ineos claims? “Without a doubt, this is a very efficient installation with relatively low CO2 emissions,” says Professor Dirk De Vos (KU Leuven). “But globally, of course, this remains a fossil story.” Several activist groups announce that they will challenge the permit in court.
