Eurovision 2023: Metalheads Megara from Spain to Represent San Marino, Loredana Bertè Defeated

No Eurovision for Loredana Bertè: metalheads Megara, from Spain, will represent the Republic of San Marino on the festival stage. The voice of I’m not a lady was sensationally defeated last night in the final of “A voice for San Marino”, the competition – now in its third edition – with which the microstate chooses its representative for the continental event, which will take place from 7 to 11 May in Malmö.

Loredana Bertè, defeated as favourite

Having arrived as a huge favorite to win, with her Pazza she left the Teatro Nuovo in Dogana in defeat, at the end of the marathon conducted by Fabrizio Biggio and Melissa Greta Marchetto.

Not excellent advertising: just to fly to the Swedish city “to go and annoy my ex-husband Björn Borg”, as she had confessed at the Sanremo Festival (when with her Pazza she had savored the taste of triumph for one evening: in the end she placed seventh and representing Italy at the Eurovision will be the winner of the Festival Angelina Mango with her La noia), the 73-year-old rocker from Bagnara Calabra had agreed to represent the microstate. Putting herself on the line and competing for the pass with colleagues with a story that isn’t exactly up to the level of a star like her: because in addition to her friend-rival Marcella Bella (competing with Who We Are Really) and the great Dana Gillespie (74-year-old British singer who after having collaborated with David Bowie – and having also had a relationship with the White Duke – she played Mary Magdalene in the original Jesus Christ Superstar of 1973: she was in competition with The Last Polar Bear), in the cast there were also meteors such as Jalisse (fresh from hosting the last Sanremo, they presented themselves with Il cielo è qui – they took part in Eurovision in 1997 with Fiumi di parole and finished fourth), Pago (someone will remember his Parlo di te, a hit from 2005 which was from soundtrack to a car commercial), Wlady with Corona, Ice Mc and the former Articolo 31 Dj Jad, the former competitors of Amici La Rua. And then unknown emeritus like Megara themselves (led by singer Kenzy Loevett, long fuchsia hair), the English Aimie Atkinson and Aaron Sibley and the emerging Daudia, Xgiove, Dez, Kida, Booom!, Mate, Masala and Foresta.

The choice

It didn’t go well and who knows how she will have taken it, smoking and angry as she is. The jury composed of Clarissa Martinelli, John Vignola, Steve Lyon, Anna Bischi Graziani and the president Celso Valli will choose the winner. She had already revealed a bit of nervousness during the performance, undermined by some problems with the audio. Despite this, Bertè managed to get a standing ovation from the audience. There was no shortage of problems with the teleprompter (Biggio immediately paid the price as he couldn’t remember the names of the San Marino secretaries of state and the teleprompter went crazy), wrong graphics, gaffes (like when Biggio, interviewing Filippo Graziani, guest of the evening, presents the tribute album to his father Ivan which has just been released as a collection of successes, but the singer-songwriter corrects him: «It’s an album of unreleased songs»), unfortunate jokes (Melissa Greta Marchetto misses a «did you go to special schools?» addressed to Biggio, who was having difficulty pronouncing the names of the members of the Slovenian band Booom!), waiting for the announcement that everyone was waiting for. Arrived at the 1st pass, with considerable delay compared to the timetable – in between the guest of Riccardo Cocciante and the greetings to Al Bano and Massimo Boldi, present in the audience – but which left everyone speechless.
