As part of the #FUNDUSZEUE series, we will show the largest investments on the Vistula River, co-financed by the European Union. The first three examples are presented below.

Completion of A1 construction – PLN 2 billion

A1 is the only Polish motorway with a longitudinal course, crossing the entire territory of the country. At the same time, it is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and the priority project “Gdańsk-Brno / Bratislava-Vienna”.

The 81-kilometer A1 section from the Tuszyn junction to the Częstochowa bypass is missing to close the entire motorway. The construction is carried out in the footsteps of the current dk no. 1, the investment is divided into five parts. It was made available at the end of October this year a new section of the road on the A1 motorway from the border area of the Łódzkie and Śląskie provinces to Kruszyn.

According to information available on government websites, the estimated cost of the entire project is approximately PLN 3.7 billion, of which EU funding may amount to approximately PLN 2 billion. According to the plan, the investment is to be completed by 2022.

After the construction is completed, the route will form the main communication route connecting the Tri-City with the Czech Republic in Gorzyczki, leading through the vicinity of Toruń, Łódź and Katowice. It is also supposed to facilitate access to Polish ports for transports from the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Hungary, and as a result ensure the development of the domestic economy.

Construction of Via Carpatia and Via Baltica routes – over PLN 2 billion

The construction of the S61 expressway is underway, which is the longest (214 km long) fragment of the international Via Baltica route, connecting the Baltic countries with Western Europe. The construction of Polish sections is co-financed by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for sections from Szczuczyn to Budzisko and the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment for 2014-2020 (OPI & E) for sections from Ostrów Mazowiecka to Szczuczyn.

“Under CEF, co-financing amounts to approx. PLN 1.7 billion, and under OPI & E – PLN 1.6 billion, which in total amounts to nearly PLN 3.4 billion” – we can read on the GDDKiA website.

The European Union is also co-financing the construction of the S19 Via Carpatia expressway. It includes o the section S19 Lublin – Rzeszów, from the Nisko Południe junction to the Sokołów Małopolski Północ junction. The investment is worth over PLN 900 million. The value of co-financing from EU funds is PLN 468 million.

The implementation of the future S19 has been spread over almost a decade and will cost a total of over PLN 27 billion, of which the cost of construction works is nearly PLN 24 billion. Almost the entire route is to be ready by the end of 2026.

In Poland, the Via Carpatia route will be over 700 km long and will run through the Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, Lubelskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships, using, in addition to S19, also the S61. Via Carpatia will connect Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. Finland, Estonia and Latvia are also to join the project.

Baltic Pipe – 200 mln euro

The European Union will finance one third of the Baltic Pipe investments, i.e. a gas pipeline through the seabed which will be used to transport gas from Norway to Denmark and Poland. Brussels will allocate over EUR 200 million for this purpose. The funds come from the Connecting Europe Facility.

The Baltic Pipe is a strategic infrastructure project aimed at creating a new gas supply corridor on the European market.

The Baltic Pipe system consists of five elements – connecting the Norwegian system in the North Sea with the Danish system, expansion of the gas transmission route through Denmark, construction of a gas compressor station on the Danish island of Zealand, an offshore gas pipeline from Denmark to Poland with a receiving terminal, and the expansion of the Polish system transmission.

The Baltic Pipe is being built jointly by the gas transmission system operators – Gaz-System and Danish Energinet.
