European Union Strong Customer Authentication – Hilfe-Center

Patrons in the European Union may require an additional authentication process for assistance. This is done by the bank in question and may be necessary when adding a credit or debit card to the account or confirming support for a creative. This step serves to reduce credit and payment card fraud and can be used by the banks of the respective patrons to comply with the EU Payment Services Directive (PSD2) are required.

This additional authentication process takes place by means of a pop-up window in which the authentication page of the bank of the respective patron appears. The pop-up may ask for a username and password, a code sent by email or text message, or another authentication method supported by the bank. Patrons should contact their bank with questions about meeting authentication requirements as Patreon has no control over the form.

I am the patron. How does this affect me?

If you add a new credit or debit card, or if you are helping a new creative, you may see a pop-up from your bank that requires additional verification. This can be a username and password, a code sent by email or text message, or any other authentication method supported by your bank.

Here is an example of what this pop-up could look like with a payment card from the Netherlands:

Please note that you have to contact your bank if you have any questions or problems with one of these pop-ups, as these pop-up windows are not from Patreon.

I am a creative. Do I have to do something about this?

No, not at all! Patreon will implement this on its platform. Creative people don’t have to do anything about this. For you everything goes on as usual.

You can find detailed information on this policy in this summary of the European Commission.
