European Commission takes action against Hungary after Orbán win

How does the rule of law mechanism work?

When a country does not comply with European rule of law rules, the European Commission sends a letter to the member state with an official warning. The country must then respond to this within three months.

If the country does not change the situation, the Commission will make a proposal to stop money from the EU budget. It is possible that all subsidies from the EU will be stopped, but that depends on how big the problems are in a country.

The Member State must then respond to this proposal within one month. The Commission then forwards the proposal to the EU countries. They will then definitively determine within two months whether money will be withheld from the EU budget, and if so, how much.
