A sensational turnaround in Italy’s candidacy for the 2032 European Championship. Our country is in fact ready to host the tournament together with Turkey, the only other candidate for the UEFA competition. The organizing committees will remain two distinct ones, the opening match will take place in Turkey (in all likelihood in Istanbul) while Italy will go to the final (thinking of Rome). The groups will be divided between the two countries and as far as our facilities are concerned, instead of the 10 planned stadiums (Milan, Turin, Verona, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Bari and Cagliari) five will be played.

On 12 April, the FIGC presented its dossier to UEFA, “inspired by a New Renaissance”, as the president Gabriele Gravina said, who has always considered the assignment of the European Championship a key step for the sustainability path of the Italian football, particularly on the infrastructure front. Also for this reason the possibility of hosting the European Championship “in the middle” is not regrettable at all.

It is not the first time that the European Championship takes place in two different countries. It happened in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2000, Austria and Switzerland in 2008 and Poland and Ukraine in 2012. For the 2020 edition (later played in 2021 due to Covid), that of Italy’s triumph at Wembley, it was opted for the traveling European Championship, a model that UEFA has no intention of repeating. Certainly the Italy-Turkey combination is different from the past, not only from a geographical point of view, but also from a political point of view.
