Euphoria and Disclosure nominated for Peabody Awards

Disclosure finally receives a well-deserved recognition in the form of awards.

After a scandalous snub by the Academy Awards, Disclosure, the Netflix documentary on trans representation in Hollywood, is gaining well-deserved recognition with a Peabody Awards nomination alongside other LGBTQ + focused media such as Welcome to Chechnya, Euphoria and the Disney Channel cartoon The Owl House.

The Peabody Awards honor “excellence in storytelling that reflects the social issues and emerging voices of our day,” according to its website. Each year, 30 stories from journalism, television, podcast / radio, and digital media are selected by a Board of Jury to receive the award. The 30 winners will be selected from this pool of 60 nominees.

Disclosure, one of the best Hollywood documentaries, goes back to the early days of filmmaking to track the portrayal of transgender people, both as characters and actors, in film. It features comments from the likes of Laverne Cox, Jen Richards, Mj Rodríguez, and Trace Lysette. The film suffered a massive snub earlier this year, when the Academy Awards announced documentaries shortlisted for the award and left Disclosure off the list.

The impact of the film can already be seen in Hollywood. Halle Berry resigned from a role as a trans man after the team of Disclosure contacted her, Ryan Reynolds launched a diversity show to get more jobs for underserved people in Hollywood after seeing her, and Oprah even cited the documentary when preparing her recent interview with Elliot Page.

Disclosure It is not the only documentary focused on homosexuals that has been recognized. Welcome to Chechnya, which was nominated for an Oscar, focuses on a group of activists who risk their lives fighting for the rights of LGBTQ + people in the country, where a purge of LGBTQ + citizens is taking place.

The special episode of Euphoria Zendaya-centric is also nominated. After the second season of the hit HBO drama was delayed for quarantine, creator Sam Levinson decided to create two special episodes that bridge the seasons; one about Zendaya’s character, Rue, and one about Hunter Schafer’s character, Jules.

In the children’s and youth category, La casa de los owls. Created by Dana Terrace, who is bisexual, The House of Owls is the first Disney show to feature an LGBTQ + female lead. Follow Luz Noceda, a bisexual Dominican-American girl who ends up entering a witch school. He soon falls in love with one of his companions, a witch named Amity.

The winners of the Peabody Awards will be announced in June during a virtual celebration. The date and time of that celebration will be announced later.
