EU to open borders with Morocco from July 1

A first list of fifteen countries, with which the European Union intends to open its borders, includes Morocco. A response from Rabat is awaited.



The European Union plans to reopen its borders from this Wednesday 1is July. A first list of fifteen countries has been drawn up by the member countries. It includes the kingdom, although the latter has still not advanced a date for the opening of its maritime and air borders.



This list mobilized several European officials from the Permanent Representatives Committee (Coreper), who met on Friday 26 June in Brussels. Discussions continued throughout the weekend, leading to several changes. The first proposal included no less than 54 countries, before being reduced to 15 countries, says Euronews.

The fifteen countries are Morocco, Algeria, Australia, Canada, Japan, Montenegro, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Uruguay and Georgia. The United States, Russia and Brazil do not appear “for fear of new homes”. As for China, it appears in this list “subject to confirmation of reciprocity”.

This first list was supposed to be approved this Saturday, June 27, but will not be approved until Monday, June 29. This delay is justified by the lively discussions taking place in Brussels. In addition, responses from the countries concerned are also awaited.

If some countries included in this list have already opened their borders, a Moroccan response is still awaited. Without giving any date, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasse Bourita mentioned the measures imposed on all travelers going to Morocco. “Morocco has a clear protocol, with confinement of at least 9 days and two PCR tests, which will impact their return,” he said.
