EU and China sidelined US in trade disputes NOW

The EU member states, China and fifteen more countries have put the United States out of action in the formation of an ad hoc dispute committee. The ministers write this in a joint statement in Davos.

With this decision, the governments bypass the blockade of the World Trade Organization (WTO) by the US. Under the leadership of US President Donald Trump, the appointment of new lawyers to the dispute committee has been blocked because the country is angry that it has lost a number of things from China.

Since then, the referee has been paralyzed in international trade disputes. Until that committee enters into force again, an alternative committee deals with trade disputes between the participating sixteen countries and EU member states. “This arrangement is open to any WTO member who wants to participate,” write the ministers.

The deal was signed by the ministers of Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Singapore, Uruguay, Switzerland and the EU member states.
