EU Aims for Transparency on External Influences as Bulgarian MEPs Criticize President’s Role in Government Formation

The European Union is looking for ways to illuminate the external influences on the processes in the EU countries. This becomes clear during the debate in the European Parliament. The Vice-President of the European Commission, Vera Jourova, said that Brussels will try to make the work of foreign organizations and their cash flows transparent.

In the context of foreign influences, Bulgarian MEPs from the EPP group Radan Kanev and Alexander Yordanov criticized the role of President Rumen Radev in the attempts to form a government in Bulgaria.

“Today we are witnessing an absolutely unprecedented attempt to block the creation of a government between the two top political forces in the country. An attempt in which organized crime is clearly involved, on the one hand, and on the other – the compromised prosecutor’s office, which is called to fight it . On the one hand – the security services, on the other – the fifth column in Bulgarian politics, against which these services should protect us. And all this is happening under the auspices of the Bulgarian president and the official government led by him”, comments Radan Kanev – MEP from DB/ENP, quoted by BNT.

“At the same time, the main reason for the political crisis and destabilization in Bulgaria in the last two years is the Russian penetration of the Bulgarian political, economic and cultural elite. At this moment, the Bulgarian president is not a unifier of the nation, but a factor in the destabilization of Bulgaria,” added Alexander Yordanov – MEP from the SDF/EPP.

An independent MEP from Croatia criticized the attempts of foreign countries to influence the processes in the EU and gave as an example the leaked recordings in Bulgaria. At the beginning of the plenary session, MEP from the DPS and the Renew Europe group Ilhan Kyuchuk cited publications in the French press related to the conversation between Kiril Petkov and Ursula von der Leyen.

Ilhan Kyuchuk described what was happening as another scandal, which, in his words, “doesn’t happen in Latin America, but in European Bulgaria”.
