Esteban Ocon vs Fernando Alonso: Who is to Blame for the Qualifying Collision?

Collisions in qualifying are not very common. However, we had a rare accident in Sao Paulo when Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso collided in the third corner. Who is more to blame for this incident? The Frenchman is clear on the matter and points the finger exclusively at the driver of Aston Martin.

Esteban Ocon labeled Fernando Alonso an “idiot” after the accident. He was firmly convinced that Alonso had cornered him. It looked a little different from the onboard shots. The Frenchman momentarily lost control of his single-seater, which almost sent him off the turn and straight into the path of the Spaniard.

This was followed by a crash into the barrier and the end of the sprint shootout for Estebana Ocona. “It was a hard impact. After such an impact, of course, I feel a little sore, but it does not matter. Now we’re going to race.”

So who was to blame? If you would expect that Ocon looks at the replays and admits at least some of the blame in front of the press, you’d be wrong. “It’s a bitter pill because we were on track for a good improvement at that round and should have progressed to Q2.”

“However, Fernando got in our way. I have heard people say that I lost control of the car, which is not true. You could see such corrections all over the paddock, even Lando in his fastest lap made a similar correction and went wide like that.”

“Fernando turned left in the middle of the corner, he didn’t give me enough space and we collided,” sputtered the disgruntled Frenchman. “But in the end it doesn’t matter, it’s already behind us. Now we are concentrating on the race.”

The commissioners summoned both drivers, but in the end they didn’t punish anyone. It is true that Fernando Alonso turned slightly to the left, but Esteban Ocon still had plenty of room if he had not lost control of the car in the corner.

Alonso he was not so aggressive and assessed that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. “Unfortunately, we did not have time to complete the qualification. It’s a shame that both cars are already out of qualifying, and that both are so damaged. We didn’t want it that way.”

“I haven’t seen replays yet. Someone told me they lost control of their car. Such things happen; you are in the wrong place at the wrong time,” sighed the Spaniard.
