Essey-les-Nancy. His room catches fire, he loses his life while defending himself

The Mouzimpré district is in shock this Saturday evening. Indeed, around midnight, the firefighters were alerted to a fire that broke out in a dwelling in the Topaze building, 12 rue de Mouzimpré. The second of the day since around 1 p.m., the firefighters had already intervened on the eighth floor but nothing suspicious had been found.

Quickly on the scene, around thirty firefighters were engaged as part of the “High-rise building” procedure. Three pump-tonne vans, a large turntable ladder as well as two rescue and victim assistance vehicles went into action. Also on site, two group leaders and a column leader, Commander Gérald Mahé.

If part of the firefighters tackled the fire raging on the eighth floor of this R + 9 building, dating from 1972 and recently renovated, the emergency services were busy in the bushes, at the foot of the building.

Polytraumatisé

And for good reason, the resident got out of a window. He allegedly jumped from the corner of the building, stepping over its balcony. Supported by the firefighters and a team of SAMU, the man, aged 47, was medicalized for a long time on the spot. Shortly after 1 a.m., he was rushed to the emergency room. Polytraumatized, his vital prognosis was engaged. The 40-year-old succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

At the same time, the firefighters, from the barracks of Nancy-Joffre, Vandoeuvre and Tomblaine, came to the end of the fire having taken in the room, the flames coming out of the window. Their colleagues then visited all the apartments on the seventh, eighth and ninth floors to ensure that all residents had evacuated the building.

In addition to a beginning of propagation on the facade, quickly controlled, it was then necessary to proceed with the ventilation of the outbuildings, heavily smoky. Outside, the large ladder was once again deployed in order to remove the exterior insulation having melted and thus ensure that no other hearth was smoldering.

Also arriving in large numbers, the national police collected the first testimonies from residents, still in shock, not really realizing what had just happened.

According to witnesses, it would seem that the unfortunate is at the origin not only of the first alert but also of the second and of the fire of his accommodation. Neighbors would have tried to prevent him from committing the irreparable, in vain. The ongoing investigation should confirm the facts.
