Essen: Commuters are restricted by construction work on the railway line

Many commuters in Essen have to be prepared for some train traffic restrictions during the holidays. Because of construction work in Langenfeld and Leverkusen, there are even no stops in Essen.

Construction work affects commuters: inside from Essen

During the summer holidays, commuters from Essen have to be prepared for restrictions. Because construction is being carried out at the Leverkusen and Langenfeld stations, the closures also affect trains that travel via Essen. In local traffic there are therefore restrictions on the S6 and RE1.

  • The S6 Does not apply between Cologne-Mülheim and Düsseldorf Hbf from Friday, July 2nd, 8:00 p.m. to Friday, July 9th, 9:00 p.m. and from Friday, August 6th, 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 14, 2:30 a.m. A rail replacement service runs there.
  • The RE 1 (RRX) will be rerouted between Düsseldorf Hbf and Cologne-Mülheim during the entire summer holidays.

There are no stops for long-distance traffic in Essen

Long-distance trains are particularly affected by the construction work. Some travel times change there. Some ICE and IC connections from the north do not stop in Essen, but run via Wuppertal. The direct connections between Essen and Berlin can continue to be offered without restrictions, says a railway spokeswoman.

Here is a detailed overview of the timetable changes:

  • The line’s ICE sprinter trains Hamburg – Essen – Cologne are diverted between Düsseldorf and Cologne. The trains arrive in Cologne around 30 minutes later, in the opposite direction they leave Cologne 30 minutes earlier.
  • The trains of the IC line Hamburg – Berlin – Münster – Cologne – Mainz – Mannheim – Stuttgart are diverted via the Wupper route, the stops in Essen, Duisburg and Düsseldorf are omitted. For the stops in Gelsenkirchen, Essen, Duisburg and Düsseldorf, the majority of the trains then stop in Dortmund and Solingen or Wuppertal. The travel time between Dortmund and Cologne is about 5 minutes longer.
  • The trains of the IC line Dortmund – Cologne – Mainz – Mannheim – Stuttgart – Ulm and the ICE line Hamburg – Bremen – Münster – Essen – Düsseldorf – Cologne are rerouted between Düsseldorf and Cologne, the journey time is extended by around 10 to 30 minutes.
  • The trains on the ICE line Dortmund – Essen – Cologne – Frankfurt – Nuremberg – Munich are diverted between Düsseldorf and Cologne, which increases the journey time by around 15 minutes. The trains in Essen, Duisburg and Düsseldorf are partially canceled. In Towards Munich the trains in Dortmund, Essen and Düsseldorf leave up to 30 minutes earlier.
  • The trains on the ICE line Dortmund – Essen – Cologne – Frankfurt – Stuttgart – Munich are diverted between Düsseldorf and Cologne via a parallel route. In Towards Munich the trains from the Ruhr area depart up to 45 minutes earlier. In the opposite direction, you will reach the stops in the Ruhr area about 15 minutes later. Most trains are canceled between Essen or Bochum and Dortmund.
  • The trains on the ICE line Dortmund – Düsseldorf – Cologne – Frankfurt – Mannheim – Stuttgart end / start already in Cologne Messe / Deutz. The stops in Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, Duisburg and Düsseldorf and for the train pair ICE 914 / ICE 915 in Münster, Recklinghausen, Wanne-Eickel and Gelsenkirchen are no longer applicable.
