Escape from Tarkov Introduces Microtransactions After Eight Years: What Gamers Need to Know

After eight years of no additional revenue, Escape from Tarkov is getting microtransactions.

In a surprise move, Battlestate Games, the development studio behind the tough extraction shooter Escape from Tarkov, has announced that their game will soon get microtransactions.

The announcement follows the last one Update 14.1 and is a controversial move for a game that had gone without additional costs since its release eight years ago. Tarkov boss Nikita Buyanov now has on Reddit some details and the reasons for this innovation are explained.

EFT gets these microtransactions

The following microtransactions are currently planned:

  • More storage space: Players of all versions can purchase up to 28 additional lines of storage space for their Stash to store your loot between raids. For standard edition players, the size of their storage space doubles.
  • Skins: In EFT, additional skins can be unlocked for your PMC by leveling up. In the future, these should also be able to be activated early with real money.
  • Offline Buy Mode: This was originally reserved for owners of the 150 euro Edge of Darkness Edition and will now be available separately after sales of the EoD Edition have stopped.

No Pay2Win: Buyanov promises that no Pay2Win elements will come into play through the microtransactions. There will be no in-game currency, equipment packs, or anything similar that could provide an unfair advantage. In addition, the additional storage space, which has the greatest gameplay relevance, can also be unlocked through game progress without using real money.

The reasons behind the microtransactions

Nikita explains that the game has been running for eight years without players having to pay for additional content – one purchase was enough for unlimited access. But now the studio is forced to generate additional income. An important factor here is the expiration of the Edge of Darkness version, the previous premium version of the game, some of whose exclusive content is now set to return.

The reaction from the Reddit community is mixed: While some players understand the need for new financing models, others fear a negative impact on gameplay – especially if BSG starts selling premium skins.

However, Buyanov immediately dispels these fears. Only the existing skins can be unlocked earlier by using real money. Conditions like those in Call of Duty, where Lionel Messi and Snoop Dogg can dance around on your corpses, are not to be feared for the time being.
