ESA Spacecraft Successfully Photographed the Sun from Close Distance, Like What?

KOMPAS.com – Spaceship Solar Orbiter belonging to the European Space Agency (THIS), is said to have succeeded in taking photos of the disc and the atmosphere or sun corona in full.

ESA announced, sighting photo Sun It was taken on March 7, 2022, combining the results of 25 different photos. They also uploaded the stunning photo on their official website.

As reported by Science Alert, Tuesday (28/3/2022) these extraordinary photos were successfully obtained with high resolution through the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI), which is owned by Solar Orbiter.

Each photo was taken with an exposure of almost 10 minutes, which had to be combined into a mosaic to unify the portrait of the beauty of the Sun.

At that time, the distance between spaceship with the Sun is only 75 million kilometers equivalent to half the distance between the average orbit of the Earth and the Sun. That is, the plane took photos of the Sun at a very close distance.

Because the resolution is so large, it is easier for researchers to zoom in on the image and analyze the fine details of the surface Sunand the corona or atmosphere.

In addition, they were also able to observe some of the Sun’s ‘bulges’ around the edges of the disc, which sometimes erupt and eject plasma into space.

When studying the Sun, one way to do this is to look at the range of wavelengths because different atoms emit different light.

Apart from EUI, other devices such as Instrumen Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) is also designed to record details from the Sun. SPICE is also collecting images that will show the appearance of the Sun in the Solar System.

Meanwhile, high-resolution photos taken by Solar Orbiter may help provide an answer to why hotter temperatures are farther from the Sun’s surface.

The results from the solar photo shoot will also help researchers better understand solar eruptions. The reason is, when this phenomenon occurs, the collision of the Sun’s particles with the magnetic field and Earth’s atmosphere causes a geomagnetic storm.
