Brussels, Jun 15 (EFE) .- Belgian footballer Toby Alderweireld, a teammate at Ajax and at Tottenham of the Danish Christian Eriksen who last Saturday suffered a swoon against Finland, anticipated on Tuesday that the match against Denmark will not be a plate of good taste.
“It will not necessarily be pleasant. And for them, it will not be easy. It can work in two ways, either giving you an extra boost or nothing. But I think we have to focus on ourselves, approach the encounter in the most professional way possible and try win it. That’s all we can do, “said the Tottenham defender, who, like Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen, knows Eriksen well.
The 32-year-old Alderweireld has known Eriksen for 12 years, when both were in the ranks of the Dutch Ajax, and also coincided with the Dane at Tottenham.
The former Atlético de Madrid defender explained that when he heard the news, just before Belgium took on Russia, he couldn’t think about the match.
“I just wanted to know if he was okay. Everyone was happy and relieved to hear on the bus on the way to the stadium that he was conscious and able to speak.”
Eriksen is currently hospitalized but out of danger.
“I am well under the circumstances,” said the player on social networks.
Alderweireld praised the behavior of the Danes after the scare, who “perfectly managed the situation.”
“They have my undying respect for that,” said the Belgian defender, who noted that Denmark is “stronger than Russia” in football terms.
“They have many qualities. It is a very good team that knows how to play (…). It is a difficult adversary, which will benefit from the support of its public. We will have to be at its best to score points,” he added.
Belgium, who beat Russia 3-0 in their first match of the European Championship Group B league, will meet on Thursday in Copenhagen against Denmark, who lost in their debut 0-1 against Finland.
