Minister of SOEs Eric Thohir revealed the possibility that PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk could go bankrupt this December. Erick Thohir is now being challenged with a Rp 1 billion bet related to this statement.
It was the Commissioner of Krakatau Sarana Infrastruktur (KSI), Roy Maningkas, who asked Erick Thohir to bet Rp 1 billion. He promised to pay Rp 1 billion if he lost.
“As commissioner subholding KSI, I challenge the Minister of SOEs to bet Rp 1 billion. If KS goes bankrupt this month, I will pay the Minister. On the other hand, if KS persists without doing what the Minister asks, I will donate the Rp 1 billion to the poor,” Roy said in a statement to reporters, Monday (6/12/2021).
Roy said that KS was in a difficult condition, but he said management was already working and now his condition is claimed to be improving. As a strategic asset, said Roy, KS should also be treated strategically.
“I used to be a commissioner at KS and now subholding KSI. I believe and believe that KS is not as bad as what the SOE Minister said,” he said.
The founder of Bara JP added that to settle KS’s obligations to a number of its creditors, the company already has a number of plans, including releasing its share ownership in KSI of up to 40 percent. However, said Roy, recently there has been a demand for KSI to sell up to 70 percent of its shares.
“If the majority of KSI shares are released, it will be detrimental to KS. Besides, saving KS does not have to give up majority ownership in KSI. The interest of the state must be a priority,” said Roy.
Roy Maningkas said, after the statement Eric Thohir, KRAS shares immediately experienced autorejection below today or down at the lowest limit price level. KRAS shares corrected -6.7% which means that shareholders, both state and public investors, suffered losses from the decline in company value of Rp. 671 billion (unrealized loss). KRAS’s divestment of KSI, which reached 70%, said Roy, could harm the state and the public as KRAS shareholders.
“So it’s not that I like to bet, but this is to convince the people that there are irregularities in this transaction, KSI has a very significant profit contribution to the KRAS holding, so that KSI’s divestment is targeted to reach 70% by 2023 and KRAS only has 30% it’s a lie. , said Roy.
Eric’s statement
In a working meeting with Commission VI of the House of Representatives, Eric Thohir stated that Krakatau Steel could go bankrupt this month if a number of restructuring steps fail. “But indeed one of them is currently crucial, if the third fails, the second fails, and the first fails, then this December (Krakatau Steel) can default,” said Erick Thohir.
The third step stuck that Erick meant was investment blast furnace, where the investment is worth US$ 850 million since 2008. There had been a bright spot with China, but it failed.
