EINDHOVEN –
More than 600 patients from the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven receive the call for a blood test. Since 27 January 2014, dental cleanings have been carried out on these people using an instrument that has not been cleaned in accordance with the applicable hygiene guidelines.

During such treatment, the gums can bleed, which does not exclude the possibility that viruses that are transferable via blood may end up on the instrument. According to the hospital, that chance is small, but it cannot be ruled out completely.
Excuses
The blood test is therefore done as a precaution. Patients who have been treated with the instrument, an ultrasonic tip, after Monday 27 January 2014 will receive a call. It concerns a total of 649 patients. Testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
If, in the unlikely event that patients are found to have hepatitis B, C or HIV infection, they will be called up by telephone for an appointment with a medical specialist for further examination and, if necessary, for treatment.
All patients have received a letter. The hospital has apologized. The dental cleaning treatments are no longer performed at the Catharina Hospital.
