Epic says its Games Store has 108 million PC users – Gaming – News

Epic Games reports that its Epic Games Store, with which it wants to offer an alternative to Steam, now has 108 million users. The popular game Fortnite is largely responsible for that.

Epic Games says that PC players spent $ 680 million in the Epic Games Store last year. Of that total amount, $ 251 million was spent on third-party titles, so developers other than Epic Games. This means that the lion’s share of the income can be attributed to own Epic titles, with Fortnite in particular.

It is not entirely clear how Epic Games arrived at the stated number of 108 million users; for example, it is unclear whether this is the number of monthly active users. Valve left know at the start of last year that it had 90 million monthly active users in 2018. Valve hasn’t published any figures for 2019 yet.

However, Valve will still have a significant lead in terms of the number of accounts and the revenue generated. According to estimates In 2017, Steam generated $ 4.3 billion in revenue. That amount only applies to the sale of games and does not cover the revenue from micro transactions or dlc.

Epic Games, in which the Chinese Tencent is an important minority shareholder, announced at the end of 2018 with a own digital store. In addition, Epic applies a principle that developers receive 88 percent of the revenue, while at Steam it is 70 percent. The company has entered into agreements for a number of games so that they are at least temporarily exclusively present on the Epic Games Store, such as the game Control and Borderlands 3.
